The application offers the Passion of Jesus in the four GospelsGod wanted to send his Son into the world to bring about the salvation of men with the sacrifice of his own life, and this tells us a lot first of all about God himself. Concretely, the Cross reveals the mercy and justice of God:a) Mercy. Sacred Scripture often reports that the Father gave his Son into the hands of sinners (see Mt 26:54), who did not spare his own Son. Given the unity of the divine Persons in the Trinity, in Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word, the Father who sends him is always present. For this reason, after Jesus free decision to give his life for us, there is the donation that the Father makes to us of his beloved Son, handing him over to sinners; this donation demonstrates, more than any other gesture in the history of salvation, the Fathers love for men and his mercy.b) The Cross also reveals to us the justice of God. This does not consist so much in making man pay for sin, but rather in restoring to man the path of truth and goodness, restoring the goods destroyed by sin. Loyalty, obedience and love towards God, his Father; the generosity, charity and forgiveness of Jesus towards his brother men; his truthfulness, his justice and his innocence, maintained and affirmed in the hour of passion and death, have this function: they empty sin of the value of condemnation and open our hearts to holiness and justice, because He has given for us.
